Clarification: On the boundaries of da’wa
Abdal-Hakim Murad, May 2014
Allahumma salli ala sayyidina Muhammadin wa-alihi wa-sahbihi wa-sallim
Around two weeks have passed since the ‘Happy British Muslims’ video was posted on YouTube, and our community has found itself sadly confused and divided. The makers of the film, whoever they may be, have clearly come under heavy fire as well as receiving fulsome compliments. Praise and blame have come from Muslims and non-Muslims alike, and the complexity of the matter has been compounded by the fact that extreme Islamophobes, and some members of our community, seem to dislike the film in equal measure. This is singular in itself; but beneath the sound and fury it is still clear that the clip has reached and softened some non-Muslims, and also some Muslims who have grown alienated from the community; and this should be registered with care. It’s rare to find celebrities doing something about tragic events occurring in some parts of the Muslim world due to it’s complexities. I applaud and thank musical artist Ellie Goulding for making this song for the children of Syria in trying to raise funds through the Save the Children UK charity organization. This will shed light to a depressing and tragic event unfolding in Syria to a wider audience.
From the YouTube video description:
Usthadha Tahera Ahmad, Associate University Chaplain and Faculty Fellow at Northwestern University, opened the first main hall session of the 50th Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) convention on Aug 30th, 2013 with this recitation of the Holy Quran. This is the first time a female has been invited to recite the Quran

We’ve seen the work of Ta’leef Collective in creating an inclusive place for Muslims, well now meet MakeSpace. This is a group of Muslims in the DC Metro area trying to create a center where Muslims can come and grow without the barrier of entries in other places.
The mission of MakeSpace is to serve as an inclusive, responsive and transparently-managed hub for the Washington Metropolitan area Muslim community, with a strong focus on youth and professionals, to grow spiritually, intellectually and professionally and to develop an American Muslim identity rooted in the values of balance and compassion through educational programs, civic engagement initiatives, community service projects and recreational activities with the aim of making the timeless message of Islam relevant to the lives of all community members.
John Oliver’s response is amazing. Watch the entire video and see how Reza Aslan uses a “seerah” style way of telling the story of Jesus (peace and blessings of God be upon him) to John Oliver. The best part is in the last part of the interview where John Oliver said he had a personal connection with the “day laborer” Jesus rather than the “touchdown” Jesus.
