I am at fault for this. Sometimes I grab my phone and start taking shots at scholars when I attend a lecture or class. It is sad really that I will probably look at it for a few seconds and that’ll be the end of it. I am at also at fault of wasting so much time on Facebook. Mark Zuckerberg is making billions off of me wasting time. Facebook literally is supposedly worth over a 100 billion dollars. I’ve decided to take be more conscious in what I do on Facebook. If it’s not pleasing to Allah then I will abstain or stay away. There are benefits to Facebook, but even the benefits waste time that could be better utilized.
Another aspect is simply disconnecting to reconnect with the world. Shaykh Hamza also said in the clip get real friends with real branches saying we should walk amongst trees. Get out there and enjoy the world. He also mentioned reading books. Get of the Facebook and pick up a real book. This is something else that I have recently seriously begun to do. After all the first word revealed to Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was “Read”.
Everything in moderation.

I told myself for years that I would use Facebook in moderation, but year after year I just kept wasting time. Life is better without it, seriously. I may be out of the loop when it comes to who went on vacation or who had a baby or who got married, etc. But I save soo much more time without it. Good riddance.

Hamza Yusuf would have more credibility making such statements if he would take Zaytuna College off Facebook, Twitter and YouTube: all three which are links on its homepage!!! The irony is not lost that he is espousing his views while being recorded for a clip to appear on You Tube to reach a larger audience. All this does is prove once again that when you point your finger at others, you have three fingers pointing back at you! I’ll work on getting friends, Hamza; you just concentrate on getting real!

Bilal, I think you are missing the point. There is a Facebook addiction problem and people are obsessed with self image more than ever. Major corporations have banned Facebook from their networks in their offices to prevent workers from wasting time. Even gmail has been banned with some of these major companies. It is not just Shaykh Hamza saying this. If you Google search about social networking addictions and in general wasting time on the internet you will find out how serious the problem.
And his emphasis on Facebook was what the majority of people use it for: talking about nothing. I myself have done this before. For example, I would make a status “Beautiful day”. It’s innocent but why did I felt the need to say that on Facebook. I just wanted to let everyone know that I am experiencing a beautiful day. In reality this is sad on my part. There are many things like this status updates you will see by many people.

I have not had a Facebook account in years.
Alhamdu lillah for that.
